What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the practice of improving how a business appears in search results for people searching nearby or for a named place.

Technical definition

Local results are ranked on three broad factors: relevance, how well the business matches the query, distance, how close it is to the searcher or the named area, and prominence, how established the business appears based on reviews, citations, and links.

The local pack, the map and three listings shown above organic results, is driven largely by the Google Business Profile rather than the website. Organic local rankings depend on the site itself, in particular location-specific pages, consistent business information across directories, and locally relevant links.

In plain terms

When someone types plumber near me, local SEO decides whether you are one of the three businesses in the map box.

It is a different contest from ranking a blog post. Distance and reviews matter as much as what your site says.

Why it matters

For a business with a service area or a physical address, local search is where nearly all the buying intent sits. Someone searching for an emergency locksmith at eleven at night is not comparing options for a week.

The order of work is consistent. Claim and complete the Google Business Profile first, since it drives the map results. Make sure your name, address, and phone number are written identically everywhere they appear, because inconsistency dilutes the signal. Build a separate page for each location or service area rather than listing them all on one page. Then ask for reviews, consistently, because review volume and recency move local rankings more than most on-page work.
