What is a google Business Profile?

A google Business Profile is the free listing that controls how a business appears in Google Search and Google Maps, including its hours, location, photos, and reviews.

Technical definition

The profile is a record in Google's business index, claimed through a verification step that confirms the claimant controls the business. Once verified, the owner controls the business name, category, address or service area, hours, contact details, photos, products or services, and can publish posts and respond to reviews.

It is the primary input to the local pack, the map-based result set shown above organic listings for queries with local intent. It functions independently of the website, though the two reinforce each other.

In plain terms

It is the box that appears on the right when someone searches your business name, and the reason you show up on Maps.

It is free, it takes an afternoon to fill in, and most small businesses leave half of it blank.

Why it matters

For a local business this is the highest-return hour of marketing work available, and it costs nothing. A complete profile with the right category, accurate hours, real photos, and a steady stream of reviews outranks a half-finished one from a larger competitor.

The things that move it are unglamorous. Pick the most specific primary category that fits. Keep hours accurate, holidays included, because wrong hours generate one-star reviews. Add photos regularly rather than once. Respond to every review, positive and negative. And check the profile periodically, since Google accepts edits suggested by the public and competitors have been known to suggest unhelpful ones.
