What is image optimization?

Image optimization is the work of reducing image file sizes and serving them in appropriate formats and dimensions, so pages load faster without visible quality loss.

Technical definition

Optimization combines four levers: resizing to the largest dimensions the image will actually display, choosing an efficient format, compressing at a quality level below the point where loss becomes visible, and serving different sizes to different screens through responsive image attributes.

Modern formats such as WebP and AVIF produce substantially smaller files than JPEG or PNG at equivalent quality. Most hosting platforms and CDNs can now convert and resize images automatically on request, which removes the manual step.

In plain terms

The photo from your phone is around four thousand pixels wide. The space it fills on your site is around eight hundred. You are sending five times more image than anyone can see.

Resize it, compress it, and the page loads in a fraction of the time with no visible difference.

Why it matters

Images are usually the largest thing on a web page by a wide margin, which makes this the highest-leverage speed work available to a small business. A homepage carrying six unoptimized photos can be ten megabytes. The same page with the same photos optimized can be under one.

The habit worth building is to resize before uploading rather than relying on the browser to scale down. A browser displaying a 4000 pixel image at 800 pixels still downloaded all 4000. If your platform offers automatic optimization, turn it on and check a product page afterward, because automatic settings are conservative by default and there is often more to gain.
