What is discussion Mode?
Discussion Mode is a Bolt.new mode that answers questions about your project and reasons through problems without generating or changing any code.

Technical definition
Discussion Mode is a Bolt.new operating mode in which the agent has full context on your project and responds with analysis, explanation, and recommendations, while making no modifications to project files.
It differs from Plan Mode in purpose rather than mechanism. Plan Mode produces an approach for work you are about to do. Discussion Mode answers questions about work that already exists.
In plain terms
Discussion Mode is asking a question and getting an answer, with nothing changing while you ask.
It is for the moments when you want to understand something rather than fix it: why does this page load slowly, what would break if I changed this, is there a simpler way to do this.
Why it matters
A question and an instruction look alike to an AI. Type "why is the checkout failing" into a build session and you may get four files rewritten in pursuit of an answer you only wanted stated.
Separating the two protects your project. You get to investigate, weigh options, and understand a trade-off before anything moves. For a non-technical builder this is the difference between learning how your own app works and being afraid to touch it.
It is also cheaper. Discussion Mode does not spend tokens on generating code you did not ask for.
