What is an AI Overview?

An AI Overview is the AI-generated summary Google displays above traditional search results, assembled from multiple sources and shown with links to them.

Technical definition

An AI Overview is generated at query time from content Google has indexed. It appears above the organic results for queries Google judges suited to a synthesized answer, and includes citation links to the pages it drew from. It does not appear for every query, and whether it appears for a given query can change.

Being cited in an Overview does not require a top organic position, and holding a top position does not guarantee citation. The two are related but separately determined.

In plain terms

It is the AI-written answer at the top of Google, before the blue links.

If the answer is complete, a lot of people stop reading there. If your site is one of the sources it names, you are still visible. If not, you are below an answer nobody scrolled past.

Why it matters

AI Overviews are why informational search traffic has become less predictable. A page that reliably brought visitors for a how-to query can lose a large share of those clicks without losing its ranking, because the answer now appears before the link.

The practical response has two parts. First, make the pages you want cited easy to quote: a direct answer near the top, clear headings, and passages that stand alone. Second, shift weight toward queries where an Overview is a poor substitute for visiting you, which for a small business means service pages, pricing, location pages, and anything involving a decision rather than a fact. Those still send people to your site.
