What is an AI IDE?
An AI IDE is an integrated development environment with AI built into its core workflow, so generating, editing, and explaining code happens inside the editor where a developer already works.

Technical definition
An AI IDE is a development environment in which model-driven assistance is a primary interface rather than an add-on. Typical capabilities include inline completion, chat with awareness of the open codebase, multi-file edits from a single instruction, and agent modes that run commands and iterate.
The defining assumption is a local development setup: a checkout of the repository, an installed runtime, and a developer who reads and writes the code the AI produces.
In plain terms
An AI IDE is a code editor with AI inside it. It assumes you are a developer working on a project on your machine, and it makes that work faster.
Why it matters
This is the category most often confused with AI app builders, and the confusion costs people weeks.
An AI IDE speeds up someone who already codes. It does not remove the prerequisites: a local environment, a runtime, package management, and the ability to read what came back. Hand it to a non-technical founder and they stall before the first prompt.
An AI builder inverts those assumptions. It runs in the browser, owns the environment, and produces a deployed application rather than files on a laptop.
So the question is not which is better. It is whether you want a faster way to write code or a way to get software without writing it.
