Building apps

What is AI app development?

AI app development covers two related things: building applications by directing AI to write them, and building applications that have AI features inside them.

Technical definition

AI app development refers to two distinct practices that share a name:

  • Building with AI: using generative models to produce the application itself, from the interface through the backend, directed through natural language rather than written by hand.
  • Building AI into an app: developing applications whose features depend on model inference, such as chat interfaces, classification, summarization, semantic search, or autonomous agents.

The two overlap in practice. An AI builder is commonly used to produce an application that itself calls a model.

In plain terms

One meaning is that AI built your app. The other is that your app uses AI. People say both and mean different things.

Both are now available to someone with no engineering team, which was not true two years ago.

Why it matters

For building with AI, the workflow is what changes. There is no environment setup, no framework decision, and no waiting on a developer. The work is specifying clearly, reviewing what came back, and iterating. Speed moves from weeks to hours, and the constraint becomes knowing what you want.

For building AI into an app, the barrier used to be machine learning expertise. Now it is an API call. What replaced the technical barrier is a design problem: deciding what the AI is allowed to do, what happens when it is wrong, and how a user recovers. Those decisions matter more than the model choice.

What has not changed in either case: someone has to define correct behavior and verify the running product does it. AI does not know your business.
